Zakat is the Third Pillar of Islam

We know that it is religiously valid and ethical to use a small percentage of actual Zakat donations to manage that donation and generate further funds instead of receiving money from other pots. Most notable is the approach to zakat prescribed by Allah (SWT) in the Qur’an in defining how zakat is to be used. This means that it is perfectly permissible to donate a portion of your zakat donation to us so that your zakat is treated with the utmost care and distributed efficiently and effectively to those who really need it the most and this is what we can guarantee.

We have already mentioned that it is religiously valid to use a small portion of zakat to cover the cost of its distribution. This is part of the teachings of the Qur’an .

In His eternal and infinite wisdom, Allah (SWT) ordained that one of the eight categories of people eligible to receive Zakat are the administrators of Zakat, called: Al-’Amilina ’Alayha [The Noble Qur’an, 9:60]

They are responsible for collecting, storing, protecting, registering and distributing zakat. In fact, this category of people ranks third in him after the poor (al-fuqarah) and the needy (al-masakin). Not only is it understood that collecting and distributing zakat is expensive as cost is incurred, but an entire category is dedicated to this very purpose precisely so that we can remain open and transparent about where the funds are being spent.

Who Can receive Zakat?

There are eight types of people to whom Zakat can be given:

• The poor (people who have no assets and means to earn a living)
• The needy (people who have no earnings or whose earnings don’t cover their basic needs)
• The wayfarer
• Those employed to administer Zakat funds
• Those whose hearts have been reconciled [to the truth/faith]
• Those in bondage
• Those in debt
• In the cause of Allah (swt)
